A group of Year 5 children gave the performance of their lives on Saturday 30th June at an event on Newcastle’s Quayside which was staged as part of the Great Exhibition of the North. Aptly called ‘Flying Free on Gateshead Quay’, Fellside pupils danced alongside children from Carr Hill and Parochial primary schools to Katrina and the Waves’ song, ‘Walking on Sunshine’. The event was a culmination of work that began 5 weeks ago when children began learning the choreography (which has lots of references to the Angel of the North within in) with Lissie from Dance City.
Following a short rehearsal, the schools gave three performances: the first outside the Sage, followed by two further performances near the Baltic.
Newcastle looked positively tropical in the summer sun – never before was the song ‘Walking on Sunshine’ so apt! I could not have been more proud of the children who looked just amazing. They clearly loved every moment of their performances.
Huge thanks to all of the supporters who came to cheer our dancers on today; and, of course, to the teachers from Dance City for sharing their expertise so generously. And to the children who performed – you were all just incredible and made so many people very happy today!
