Fellside’s Annual Design and Technology challenge has perhaps been the trickiest yet; however, the students and families did not shy away from the task before them. They were set the challenge to design and build a crane which used air or water pressure to move!
The cranes arrived in all shapes and sizes – some even with DRAGONS – but all looked just as professional as the cranes which are busy building the neighboring Whickham Comprehensive school, which were the inspiration for this years challenge.
The children and their families made cranes of wood, cardboard, plastic and even k’nex to gain an award in one for these three categories:
- Most innovative
- Most aesthetic
- Most powerful
Our judge this year was Chris Vinnicombe, who is a STEM Ambassador and New Rolling Stock Engineer at Nexus Rail. He had a very difficult decision before him with such fine engineering from students in Nursery to Year 6, so Miss Watson and Miss Graham (DT Coordinators) did not envy him the task!
There were 23 fantastic designs and 32 children taking part. It was a very difficult decision. In the end, three winners were chosen…
Most Powerful – Laure
Most Innovative – Eva
Most Aesthetic – Hannah and Lachie
They received a k’nex set and the honour of being Fellside’s Mechanical Engineering Aficionados!
