Careers Related Learning at Fellside
We know that even at the young age of three or four, children are already starting to form their first aspirations. By six they are starting to have opinions on what they think they can or can’t do in the future. And by the time they’re 10, young people start to make decisions which could go on to limit their future options. We believe it is vital to provide children with knowledge about the world of work and to develop a range of skills and aspirations that will benefit their future learning and readiness for their future career.
Initially, Fellside joined a pilot programme led by the North East Local Enterprise Partnership (NELEP) to strengthen careers learning in primary school. Whilst participating in this partnership, we were introduced to the Gatsby Benchmarks in order to develop careers related opportunities for our pupils. During the pilot, we achieved all 8 benchmarks enabling us to develop and embed a careers curriculum, ensuring Fellside pupils have the best possible early knowledge and guidance to help them understand the exciting opportunities that are open to them as possible career options as they grow up.
It’s not about children choosing their future jobs at this very young age. It’s about helping our children and young people to have ambitions and aspirations for themselves, helping them to learn about the variety of jobs open to them and the fantastic range of opportunities we have in the region. Fellside pupils also gain a broad understanding of the routes to get into work and training, including the essential skills and attitudes required to be successful in both further study and in the workplace.
In the summer of 2021, we were delighted to be accredited with the Careers Mark as a result of the success of the programme we have implemented at Fellside.

International Day of the Girl VEXGO Robotics
by Mrs Greenwood | Oct 14, 2023 |
As part of the International Day of the Girl on Friday 11th October some Fellside girls took part in a multi school STEM event at Portobello Primary School in Birtley, focusing on girls in STEM and robotics. There were lots of visitors from local technology industries, guest speaker Steve from RGS, MP Liz Twist with a member of her team who was an ex Fellside pupil to name but a few! The team at Portobello Primary of Mr Bone and Mr Chipchase plus everyone else from their school put on an amazing day for the girls, really allowing them to shine and showcase their STEM skills. Huge thank you to them for hosting, and our parent support in getting our girls to this special event!
