Year 1 Great Fire of Gateshead workshop and Discovery Museum

Year 1 have been learning all about the Great Fire of London and Gateshead as part of our history topic this term. We visited the Discovery Museum in Newcastle for a Great Fire of Gateshead workshop. Fran told us all about how the fire started and how easily it spread between the buildings by being so close together. The children had to pretend to be the buildings, wiggling with flames and spreading from one person to the next! Fran also told us all about the explosions and the devastation the fire caused and how it burned for a day and a half! We took part in a puppet show where we reenacted the story and the children played different characters such as the police officer who discovered the fire in the wool factory and Charles Bertram who owned the chemical factory next door and sadly died in the explosion. We also looked at a range of Victorian artefacts and had to guess what they were. After lunch we explored the Science Maze where there were displays about gravity, light, sound, electricity, magnetism and of course, a Victorian fire engine!
